Summer 2008 - Classes, Seminars, and Workshops
If you are a current Celtic Arts Center member, click on the link for member enrollment. If you wish to become a member to get the discount class rate, you can go ahead and enroll online as a member, and we will process your membership application at the first class. Credit cards can now be accepted for memberships and tuition as well as checks or cash.

Pre-registration is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED for all classes.
Some of these classes will not be held unless a minimum number of registered students is reached.

Beginner's Traditional Highland Dance Workshop
4 Saturdays -- May 31 to June 21
Time: 7:30PM 9PM
Location: Culver City, CA

The workshop will teach the basic steps of the most common and well-known Highland dance — the Highland Fling. This four step dance, which can be expanded to six or even eight steps, can be seen at almost every Highland games, and is often a seminal part of any Scottish celebration.
Teacher: Sasha Hsuczyk is a championship Highland dancer, competing in Highland dance competitions throughout the state and is the winner of many awards and accolades. She performs annually at the Southern California Renaissance Faire as well as many other dance venues.

Irish Céilí Dance Instruction
Tuesday nights 7PM - 8PM

The class will teach both the simple party dances such as Walls of Limerick, Haymaker's Jig, Fairy Reel, as well as the more advanced dances like Eight-Hand Jig and High Cauled Cap. This class strives to go beyond the basics taught in our Monday night free céilí dance workshop and even offers a chance to choreograph new and unique dances. Emphasis will be placed on learning proper form and footwork throughout the course.

Scottish Gaelic (Gàidhlig) Study Group

Tuition: $5/meeting for non-members
but FREE for ACS/CAC members!
Emphasis is on pronunciation, conversation and reading. In the first part of each class, we usually review very basic material, and in the second hour, we work at a more advanced level, for continuing study group members. (Beginners are welcome to stay, of course.)
The textbook is Teach Yourself Gaelic by Boyd Robertson and Iain Taylor (readily available at Barnes and Noble, Borders, or Amazon). Students are advised to purchase the complete "Teach Yourself Gaelic" course which includes the book as well as a CD/tape invaluable for ongoing listening practice. We will also include some Gaelic songs and practical conversation (Gaelic tea & biscuits, etc.).
Teacher - Eva Gordon has been studying Scottish Gaelic in books, online and via human interaction for the past 15 years. She has attended a number of workshops sponsored by ACGA (An Comunn Gàidhealach America/Gaelic Society of America) at Grandfather Mountain, North Carolina, and Richmond, Virginia, and at the Gaelic College, St. Ann’s, Cape Breton, N. S. A member of ACGA , she was the winner of ACGA's Distance Mòd Prose Competition (advanced) in 2002, ACGA’s Advanced Gaelic Scholarship, 2005, and winner of the Great Lakes Gaelic Mòd 2005. An active member of The Celtic Arts Center, she sings in the An Cór Ceilteach, the Center's choir.
